Data recently released shows that Istiklal Avenue welcomed over 90 million visitors during the year 2024, retaining its status as the busiest street in Turkey with hundreds of commercial shops, restaurants, and boutique stores for tourists and locals to browse.
According to the data, annual 2024 footfall on Istiklal Avenue surpassed 90 million. Of this, weekday visitors averaged 207,000 people, while weekend visitors averaged 313,500 people. This was a 2% increase in weekday visitors and a 7% increase in weekend visitors when compared to 2023. The monthly average reached 7.5 million throughout the year.
The report also noted other key streets and shopping districts in Turkey. Bagdat Street on the Asian side of Istanbul saw a decrease in annual footfall traffic due to renovation works led by the Istanbul Municipality and urban regeneration. Despite this, the street still managed to welcome 31.4 million visitors in 2024.
The shopping district of Nisantasi, comprising of the streets Rumeli, Vali Konagi, Tesvikiye, and Abdi Ipekci, experienced a significant increase in footfall throughout 2024 with 36.2 million annual visitors reported. Of this, weekday visitors amounted to 78,000 people, while weekend visitors increased considerably to 153,000 people for a monthly average of three million.
Abdi Ipekci Avenue in Nisantasi is the most expensive street to rent a commercial property with prices reaching $250 USD per square metre – higher than comparable shopping streets in Prague, Helsinki, and Amsterdam. Istiklal Avenue took second place with rental prices reaching $220 USD per square metre. Rental prices in Bagdat Avenue reached $150 USD per square metre.
Stretching 1.4 kilometres in length, Istiklal Avenue is the busiest shopping street in Turkey and one of Istanbul’s most iconic postcard hotspots. Data showed that the street currently has 270 retail units available, of which 258 are currently occupied. These include boutique shops, restaurants, pharmacies, and more. International retailers make up 15% of total shops found on Istiklal.
