About the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art
In 1987, the idea came about during the first art exhibition, the International Istanbul Biennial. Mass interest in a permanent collection prompted Dr Nejay F Eczacibasi to take on the task. After much searching, a former 19th-century manufacturing plant on the Golden Horn was adapted and housed the 3rd International Biennial in 1991, but the idea did not take off.
The project finally took off when the 8th International Istanbul Biennial took place in the 4th warehouse on Galata Pier. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan approved the site for permanent use, and the 8,000 square feet building on the Bosphorus shores became home to the Modern Museum building. However, the future changed, and their new location is now in Galataport, with a stunning new building to match.
Construction and Architecture
High-profile Italian architect Renzo Piano designed the new 5-floor museum at the new location of Galataport. Renzo Piano also designed numerous international museums with excellent public spaces like Centre Pompidou, Whitney Museum, Centro Botín, and Beyeler Foundation Museum, hence the prestigious connection. Covering 10,500 square metres, the new design features exhibition galleries and multifunctional spaces. With steel circular columns designed to resist seismic events that could damage priceless collections, the architecture blends light and shadow.
Visitors Experience
On the ground floor level, next to the main lobby, is a library, café, and museum shop as well as information points to enhance your visit. In the centre of the ground-level lobby, a wide staircase leads to the next floor, home to a 156-seat auditorium, staff offices, and rooms for educational programs and events. The second floor, covering 3,300 square metres, houses the permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, and a staircase from here leads to the top terrace. The upper levels, glancing out over Tophane and the Bosphorus strait, have amazing views, and a restaurant on the south-facing side, with an outdoor terrace and sea views.
